Title: Quasar winds and ghosts

Abstract

Outflows are common in type-I active galactic nuclei and exhibit a wide range of velocities (100-10000 km/sec) and ionization levels (HI to FeXXVI). Despite some 40 years of research, little is known about their location, mass, and geometry. Here I present a new, self-consistent scheme for the calculation of the ionization structure and dynamics of such flows assuming radiation pressure force is their main driver. I show that accurate (non-Sobolev) dynamical modeling can explain many of the observed UV and X-ray features. Comparing model predictions to high resolution UV and X-ray observations reveals several key properties of these flows.
