Title: The Compact High Velocity HI Clouds as Dark Matter Mini-Halos

Abstract

The high velocity atomic hydrogen clouds (HVCs) have remained enigmatic since their discovery via 21 cm observations decades ago. I will present an up-to-date review of the observational properties of the HVCs. I will then discuss the hypothesis that a component of the high velocity gas - the compact clouds (CHVCs) - traces cold-dark-matter ("mini-halo") substructure in the Milky Way halo or Local Group environment. I will present quantitative mini-halo models for the CHVCs that are able to account for many of their key observational properties. A characteristic distance of 150 kpc is inferred for these objects.
