Over the past decade there is growing evidence for a close connection
between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies. New
frontiers have opened to explore this connection with the launch of the
infrared space telescopes Spitzer and Herschel. Spitzer spectra allow us to
explore the dusty structure that surrounds the central accreting black hole
and constrain its properties. We find that a crucial component of hot,
pure-graphite dust is missing from current models.
I will also present new Herschel observations that reveal extreme star
formation activity in the host galaxies of z~4.8 luminous AGNs. These
observations suggest that such sources most likely reside in major mergers,
and possibly provide evidence for AGN feedback.
